]]>The Rhodes founder is just one of Mary Philips’ clients, with others including Jennifer Lopez and Kylie Jenner. For years, the MUA has been using an application strategy that we have all now cottoned onto.
Called “underpainting”, it involves applying concealer and contour before putting in foundation. The result?
A gorgeous “lit from within” glow that also looks super natural.
The trick to underpainting is starting with good skincare. You want to make sure the skin is well-moisturized with creams and serums so that it looks good even with little makeup.
Apply contour along the hairline, down the bridge of the nose, beneath the cheekbones, and the jawline to create a sculpted look, and then place concealer under the eyes. You then want to apply a thin layer of foundation using a fluffy brush for that air-brushed effect.
Finish it off with some cream-based bronzer and blush, and you’re good to go!

]]>Mom Kim always looks flawless, and it was no different this Thanksgiving. The only difference is that her eldest daughter was the one responsible for doing her make-up, as she showed in a tutorial posted on TikTok.
North begun by showing what products she would be using to create the festive look. The list included items from Rihanna’s Fenty brand, her aunt’s Kylie Cosmetics, and Kim’s very own KKW Beauty (RIP).
The 9-year-old started by applying a serum to the reality star’s skin and dabbing it in with a black beauty blender, before adding foundation, and contouring Kim’s cheekbones with a brush.
Concealer was applied under the eye, the tip of the nose, and the Cupid’s bow to highlight, with North blending it in before baking with setting powder. Bright pink blush added a flush to Kim’s cheeks, which the young lady buffed in with a brush. She then completed the look with a KKW lipliner and a slick of Kylie’s gloss.
Good job, Northie!

]]>The post Black vs Brown Mascara: Which Should You Choose? appeared first on LUX & LUSH.
]]>For years, black has dominated in the color palette when it comes to lashes. Those who are bold enough may have tried more striking hues like purple and blue, but for most of us, basic black is best. Brown, however, has put its name in the ring and is currently having a moment.
Brown mascara is changing the game on social media where millions are experimenting with the softer shade. So, which should you choose?
The whole point of mascara is to define your lashes and make your eyes pop. If your natural hair color is dark, stick to black—but if you are more fair, brown could work nicely. A warm brown will also bring out blue and green eyes as the shades are on opposite ends of the color wheel.
No matter how many coats you apply, brown mascara is never going to provide as dramatic an effect as its black counterpart. If you prefer a softer, daytime look, brown will give you that; but if you are hoping to slay with a smoky eye, definitely opt for black.
You could always use mascara on the top lashes for a fuller, more-defined look, while applying brown to the bottom for some definition that doesn’t appear too heavy. Who says you can’t have the best of both worlds?

]]>There’s no way you’ll get a smooth coat of paint if the wall you’re working on is cracking. In short: make sure the canvas (AKA your skin) is clean and moisturized. Apply a hydrating mask that targets your specific skin type, and then gently massage in your moisturizer. Make sure to keep dry skin at bay by exfoliating 1-2 times a week.
When applying your foundation, begin in the center and work your way outwards to the rest of the face. To keep it natural, apply a light layer and allow your face’s natural features, like your freckles, to shine through!
There are many ways to apply foundation, from brushes to blenders and even fingers. Regardless of what tool you choose, it’s important to have the right technique. Avoid “painting on” the make-up as this can cause it to appear streaky. Instead, bounce your sponge, or buff if using a brush.

Having been in the glamor game for over two decades, Sir John understandably has a list of products that he loves. These are his Top 5.
This dual-ended stick has both a darker shade for contouring and a lighter shade to highlight. Plus, it is infused with lychee extract!
This contour stick transforms from cream to powder and has a matte finish. For a lasting lifted appearance, set the cream contour with a cool-toned powder to keep everything in place for hours.
Acids from pineapple, passion fruit, and papaya make up this exfoliating mask that is said to improve your skin’s radiance. “It literally resurfaces your skin immediately; even if you’re super sensitive, it’s not a problem,” notes Sir John.
Waterproof? Smudge-proof for 16 hours? Yes, please! If you want proof, this is what Beyoncé wore while performing on her On the Run Tour and it did. not. budge.
This concealer includes balancing and light-diffusing powders which is the equivalent of fairy dust. Make sure to properly hydrate your under-eye area before applying.

]]>Before make-up can be applied, it’s important to prep the foundation it will sit on—AKA your skin. “Make sure to do all of your stronger skin treatments (lasers, peels, etc) at least two weeks before your wedding day to allow your skin to heal and purge any impurities or breakouts,” Leah told Poosh. She also recommends not trying out new products or treatments close to the big day in case your skin has a bad reaction.
No one wants to look puffy in pictures (even Diddy let the name go!) Ice is the easiest way to calm down puffiness, but can also cause redness if applied directly to the skin. Keep a bowl of ice cold water and a clean washcloth on hand, or place a jade roller in the fridge ahead of time.
“We went a bit smoky in the crease and lighter on the lids, with a touch of liquid liner for a classic look,” Leah said of Kourt’s eye make-up. If you’re looking for more drama, Leah is all about mixing lashes. “I love using individual lashes because they’re almost undetectable and make it easy to layer and customize. I cut pieces of a strip lash and layered the pieces throughout.”
Wedding days are emotional! To avoid your mascara running, make sure to use a waterproof version. Leah goes so far as to suggest that other products should be waterproof too: “Waterproof everything! Mascara, lipstick, and even brows.”
The day is long, so keep a touch-up kit on hand to correct any mishaps that may have occurred. “In mine I like to keep pressed powder, lip liner, lip gloss, Q-tips, tissue, blotting papers, toothpicks, mints, and a mascara spoolie,” Leah says.

]]>If you ever needed proof that the sun is a dangerous entity, the term “sunburn” should be enough. Red and painful is not the trend we’re going for, thank you very much. What is on trend, though, is applying blush in a way that looks as though you got slightly burnt—just ask Hailey Bieber. For best results, use a cream blush and apply in a “W” shape across your cheeks and nose.
Over the years, many a freckled person has sought to cover their dots using make-up. The irony, now, is that make-up is being used to create those tiny marks on people who don’t possess the freckle gene! The faux freckles can be achieved using eyeliner and gently tapping the spots. And if freckles come naturally to you, now is the time to embrace your genetic gift!
Some people turn golden by being in the sun, and others end up looking related to a tomato. If you’re the latter, bronzer is your new best friend. Choose a powder or cream bronzer that is a shade or two darker than your skin tone. Blend it around the edges of your face, your cheekbones, and collar bones for a gorgeous glow that’ll make it seem like you’ve spent hours working on your tan.
