Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced on Monday, Nov. 27 that they are engaged and are planning to marry in the spring of 2018. They were waiting for the Queen to give her permission for the engagement before he proposed, which took place earlier this month in London. Prince Harry and Meghan are expected to take the title of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The couple will move into Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace, making them neighbors to Harry’s brother William and sister-in-law, Kate.
Meghan is an actor and humanitarian who graduated from Northwestern with a double major in theater and international relations. She’s devoted much of her time to public service, acting as a global ambassador for World Vision and a United Nations advocate for women. Although she seems like the perfect wife and daughter-in-law, with the announcement of the engagement, this is telling us how much the British Monarchy has changed over the last decades. Meghan is a divorced, biracial American who had a Catholic education, making her the first American set to marry into the royal family since 1936. It is safe to say this couple will be taking the British Monarch into a more modern era.
