Is Adding Collagen to Your Diet Worth It?

Every few years, a new trend emerges that promises to reboot your skin like a new Batman franchise. One of the latest wellness recommendations doing the rounds is to include collagen in your diet.

Collagen is responsible for tissue connectivity and skin elasticity. In other words, less collagen equals more wrinkles. As we age, our bodies naturally begin to make less protein which leads to the effects of aging skin. The new trend is to re-introduce collagen through supplements, protein powders, and skincare products. But is it worth the hype?

According to studies, additional collagen can improve the firmness of the skin, as well as its texture. The gelatinous nature of collagen also adds hydration, leaving the skin more supple and healthy-looking.

It’s not just skin that benefits from a collagen boost. As collagen is a key component of cartilage, supplements can enhance joint mobility as it increases the cushioning between them. Nails and hair also get an upgrade as the protein prevents brittleness and can make both grow longer and stronger.

Collagen isn’t right for everyone, however. Those with allergies to fish, shellfish, and eggs may have a bad reaction. Some people have also reported experiencing digestive issues like heartburn, nausea, and bloating.
