How to Protect Your Hair and Keep it Healthy in the Summer

There’s so much to love about summer—the sun, the beach, relaxing by the pool. Unfortunately, many of the seasonal pastimes we enjoy most also seem to do the most damage to our hair. Sun exposure, chlorinated pools, and high humidity can wreak havoc on locks, leaving them dry, frizzy, and brittle. However, with a little extra TLC, you can protect your hair from damage so that it maintains a healthy shine all season long. Here are some of our best summer hair-saving tips.

Keep it Covered

Protect against damage at the source by keeping your hair covered from the sun’s harmful rays. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use a scarf when spending time outside, and consider using a leave-in conditioner with UV protection to create a barrier against sun damage. Like sunscreen, for your hair.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

A dry hair cuticle will become weak and brittle, so it’s essential to prioritize moisture retention to keep your hair healthy. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week, and apply a leave-in conditioner after washing your hair. We also recommend avoiding excessive heat styling and opting to air-dry your hair whenever possible.

Do a Pre-Rinse

Like a sponge, your hair is absorbent and will indiscriminately soak up whatever liquid you submerge it in. To protect it from the damaging effects of chlorine and salt, thoroughly wet your hair with clean water before you go swimming. Afterward, rinse thoroughly and use a clarifying shampoo to remove any residue. Follow up with plenty of conditioner.
