How to Make Your Technology Use More Mindful

Technology is such a huge part of most people’s lives nowadays. Many of us are living in ways that mean we are dependent on technology for so many things, which can feel quite unnatural and unhealthy. There are many things that we unfortunately do need to rely on technology for, but this doesn’t mean we can’t be mindful of it. Taking a more mindful approach to our relationship with the gadgets in our lives and our use of these devices can help us feel less trapped by them. Here are some ideas for fostering a more mindful use of technology.

Set Time Limits

It can be easy to lose sight of the presence of technology in our lives and not notice how much it’s taken over. For example, many people reach for their phone first thing in the morning and use it just before bed as well. These habits are not great for our mental well-being and can greatly impact sleep. Introducing time limits to tech use can be helpful, so try to have a ban on using these items until a certain time in the morning, and after a certain time at night.

Ask Yourself if It’s Necessary Each Time

So often this reliance on technology has come about from habitual actions that we slip into without realizing. Next time you reach for your phone, laptop, or tablet, simply ask yourself whether it’s actually needed at that moment. For example, if you want to research something could you find a book instead? Or perhaps find fun activities to replace social media use.
