Fans lost it when the Academy Awards nominations were announced last Friday, introducing us to many amazing new movies worth checking out. If you want to watch all the best picture contenders before the Oscars, we’re bringing you a brief viewing guide that will help you figure out where to find them.

Big Screen

Many of the Oscar contenders aren’t available on streaming services, and you can only check them out on the big screen. Historical dramas The Brutalist and Nickel Boys can only be seen in theaters, along with the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and the Portuguese political drama I’m Still Here.

Streaming Services

The crime musical Emilia Pérez made quite a splash after hitting Netflix, and it went on to score 13 Academy Awards nods. Dune: Part Two can also be streamed on Netflix, in addition to being available on Hulu. The Substance can be streamed on Mubi, while Conclave is only available on Peacock.

Rent or Buy

Apple TV and Prime Video offer several best picture contenders in digital format. The hit musical Wicked and the indie dramedy Anora can be purchased or rented, in addition to still showing in theaters. Dune: Part Two, The Substance, and Conclave are also available available to purchase or rent, in addition to streaming online.

The Golden Globes nominations set the tone for the rest of the award season and brought quite a few shockers our way. Emilia Pérez scored ten nominations this time around, but its domination caught us by surprise, along with these major shockers that broke the internet after the nominations were announced.

Surprise: Squid Game

Squid Game is yet to return to Netflix for its second season, and its inclusion in the best television series – drama left many Golden Globe fans pretty confused.

Snub: Best Motion Picture – Drama

Several movies expected to break into the best motion picture – drama, including Blitz, Sing Sing, and The Piano Lesson, failed to make the cut, leaving it up to September 5 to take their spot.

Surprise: The Substance

Horror movies usually don’t get much love at major award shows, so it’s quite refreshing to see The Substance over-perform at the Globes and receive five nominations.

Snub: Best Director

The best director field features many worthy contenders this year, but it’s quite a shocker to learn that Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two) and Jon M. Chu (Wicked) will have to sit this one out.

Surprise: Sebastian Stan

It took some time for the Golden Globes to give Sebastian Stan his flowers, but he’ll enter this year’s ceremony with not one, but two nods for The Apprentice and A Different Man.

Snub: Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse Ronan has given us two great performances this year, in Steve McQueen’s historical war epic Blitz and the indie drama The Outrun, but it wasn’t enough to score a Golden Globe nomination.

After a lot of anticipation, this year’s Grammy nominations are finally in, and Beyoncé is leading the way with historic 11 nods. The Recording Academy made some pretty interesting and unexpected choices this time around, and here are five snubs and surprises that got everyone talking.

Snub: Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande’s latest album Eternal Sunshine helped her score her sixth consecutive nomination for the best pop vocal album, but it was completely shut out of the main categories.

Surprise: The Beatles

The Beatles used the power of AI to extract John Lennon’s voice from an old demo for their final song “Now and Then”, and the Recording Academy recognized their efforts with a shocking record of the year nod.

Snub: Jack Antonoff

Jack Antonoff won the producer of the year award three times in a row, but he isn’t even in the running this time around. This is quite a shocker since he produced two AOTY contenders – Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet.

Surprise: Album of the Year

Speaking of album of the year, this category was quite difficult to predict, and it was a huge shocker to see New Blue Sun by André 3000 and Djesse Vol. 4 by Jacob Collier getting nominations.

Snub: Song/Record of The Year

Song/record of the year categories also brought several suprises our way. Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” was chosen as song of the year contender over “Espresso”, while Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” was snubbed for record of the year despite spending 16 weeks at No. 1.

Nobody Wants This is one of the latest comfort shows to take Netflix by storm, and its fans were left craving for more after binging the first season. If you feel the same way, here are five rom-com series worth checking out if you loved watching Kristen Bell and Adam Brody fall in love.

The Good Place

Also led by Kristen Bell, The Good Place centers on a group of people figuring out what it means to be good in the afterlife. Despite exploring different themes, Eleanor’s relationship with Chidi is quite similar to the one from Nobody Wants This.

The O.C.

If you want to see some more of Adam Brody after watching Nobody Wants This, now’s a better time than ever to revisit Orange County and get reunited with his iconic The O.C. character Seth Cohen.

Love

If you’re in the mood for some more shows about people from completely different walks of life, trying to build a successful relationship, Netflix’s Love is a good place to start.

Starstruck

Another series about a couple trying to build something that lasts despite their very dissimilar lifestyle, Starstruck centers on a young woman from New Zealand looking for her purpose in London, when her fling with an A-list actor turns into something serious.

You’re the Worst

A hilarious and honest look at millennial dating, You’re the Worst centers on two toxic people trying to overcome their self-destructive nature and find true love together.

Adaptations of classic novels are never going out of style, and Hollywood can’t get enough of them these days. Some of our favorite gothic books are getting brand-new adaptations, and here are three that everyone’s buzzing about.

Wuthering Heights

Emerald Fennell announced that she’s working on the new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel Wuthering Heights earlier this year, and this project is finally taking shape. It will be one star-studded affair, with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi on board to play the leading duo, Catherine and Heathcliff.

Frankenstein

Speaking of Jacob Elordi, Wuthering Heights isn’t the only highly-anticipated adaptation he has on the way. He’ll also play Frankenstein’s monster in Guillermo del Toro’s version of Mary Shelley’s classic tale, opposite Oscar Isaac as the mad genius Victor Frankenstein. This project wrapped up production in July, and it will be released by Netflix sometime next year.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Netflix is also getting ready to put a modern twist on The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Katie Rose Rogers developed a modern-day adaptation The Grays for the streaming giant, which will be set against the backdrop of the beauty industry and revolve around siblings Basil and Doran Gray.

Ever find yourself scrolling endlessly, looking for something to watch that’s just easy and fun? Well, here’s a list of classic TV shows that are the perfect remedy for those laughter cravings. These shows are like comfort food for your soul, timeless in their humor, and always there to lift your spirits.

Friends

There’s a reason Friends remains a go-to comfort show. The antics of Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe are endlessly relatable and amusing. Whether it’s Ross’ leather pants fiasco or Chandler’s awkward encounters, this show never fails to deliver.

The Office (U.S.)

The Dunder Mifflin crew offers a humor-filled escape with their quirky and often cringe-worthy office dynamics. Michael Scott’s managerial mishaps, Dwight’s bizarre antics, and Jim’s pranks on Dwight are just some of the moments that make this show a treasure trove of comedy.

Parks and Recreation

The endlessly optimistic Leslie Knope and her Pawnee colleagues bring a unique blend of humor and heart. The show’s clever writing shines through in episodes like “Treat Yo’ Self” and “The Comeback Kid”, making it a classic.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

This cop-comedy balances humor with action seamlessly. The chemistry among the squad, particularly Jake and Captain Holt, provides constant entertainment. Not to mention, the Halloween heist episodes are comedic gold.

This summer has given us many amazing new albums, but Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet probably created more buzz than any other. Some of the songs from this record are growing into the biggest hits of 2024, and we can’t get enough of these five.

“Espresso”

The song that started it all, “Espresso” did a great job setting the stage for Carpenter’s new era, and it’s one of the smash hits that the summer of 2024 will be remembered by.

“Please Please Please”

After rocking our world with “Espresso”, Carpenter stirred even more commotion with the music video for “Please Please Please” starring her boyfriend Barry Keoghan, and she scored her first No. 1 hit in the US along the way.

“Taste”

Just when we thought Carpenter couldn’t possibly give us a better music video than the one for “Please Please Please”, she rocked our world with the gory Death Becomes Her-coded visual for “Taste” starring Jenna Ortega.

“Slim Pickins”

Short n’ Sweet has given us many silly lyrics that left the singer’s fans puzzled, and “Slim Pickins” was one of the songs they were frantically trying to decode after the full album hit the shelves.

“Bed Chem”

“Bed Chem” is growing into one of the favorite new songs among the singer’s fans, and they’re convinced her relationship with Barry Keoghan was her main source of inspiration.
