Winter has many positives, but making our lips feel like sandpaper is not one of them. Chapped lips become way more common when the weather turns cooler, but here are some things you can do to ensure your pout stays perfect all year round.
Don’t Lick or Pick
This is the hardest step, but one of the most important. Many of us pick our lips subconsciously, but doing so actually dries them out more. Saliva contains enzymes that break down the skin on our lips. As for picking at the skin? Well, that’s pretty self-explanatory.
Sunscreen
The skin on our lips is different to other parts of our body in that it does not possess a top layer with UV protection. To keep your pout protected from the sun’s harmful rays, apply a lip calm that contains SPF (yes, even on cloudy days!).
Keep Hydrated
Are you drinking enough? It can be easy to forget during winter when we are naturally less thirsty, but not getting enough fluids can leave our skin dry—especially on our lips.
Lip Balm
You’re probably doing this one already, but it’s worth mentioning again. Look for balms with soothing ingredients like lanolin and petroleum. A good tip is also to apply lip balm before going to sleep.
