3 Hacks to Care for Highlighted Hair

Highlights are one of our favorite things to do to our hair. It is the easiest way to brighten up a look and have you leaving the salon feeling fresh. But, as with all good things, that freshly-colored hair doesn’t last forever. However, there are ways to care for your highlights that will keep them—and you—on a high as long as possible.

Don’t Overwash

Washing one’s hair can be tempting, especially when the weather reaches sweltering degrees. But washing hair too frequently can cause the color to fade fast. Opt for a shampoo and conditioner that is specifically for color-treated hair and keep washing it every third day.

Water Quality Counts

The quality of the water coming out of the shower may not be something you think of, but your hair will be happier if you do. Mineral deposits in hard water can make your hair appear dull and your blonde streaks turn yellow. Invest in a showerhead filter and watch how your hair shines.

Heat Protectant is a Must

We all know the kind of damage that heat styling can have on our hair, but highlights can take it especially hard due to bleach being used to lighten the area. Before letting a flat-iron or curling wand touch your locks, make sure you’ve applied a thermal protectant.
