Weak, brittle nails can be a major cause of misery, and the concerns are not just cosmetic. Carrying out simple tasks such as opening jars can become harder if your natural nails are seriously weak and brittle, and dry, flaking nails take away all the fun from getting a manicure. If weak nails are something you’re struggling with, check out these simple tips on how to naturally strengthen them.
Nutrition
The first thing to consider is whether you’re fuelling your body with sufficient vitamins and minerals. Healthy nails will need sources of healthy fats, which can be found in foods including fish, avocados, nuts, and olives. They will also need plenty of protein (for that, turn to legumes, fish, eggs, and cheese), calcium (found in dairy products, sesame, and calcium-set tofu), and vitamin E (think olives, avocados, and almonds). Making sure that you’re fuelling your body well will help your skin, nails, and hair to look healthy and strong.
UV Exposure
While you certainly don’t want to overdo the UV exposure, giving your nails some air time in the sun is a good way to naturally strengthen them. If you’re always wearing polish or gel nails, it’s worth considering giving your nails a break so that they can strengthen in the sun.
Apply Oil
Hand cream is great at nourishing and caring for nails, but you can also apply a neutral oil directly to your nails to give them a healthy gloss and sheen. Vegetable or nut-based oils such as almonds work great for this, and a little goes a long way so this needn’t be an expensive investment.
