A Beginner’s Guide to Lino Printing

Lino printing is a fun and creative hobby that can help you create homemade art, cards, and invitations. If you’d like to give it a go but don’t know where to start, read on for the key materials and techniques you need to perfect this craft yourself.

Materials

To get started, you will need:

  • Linocut tools
  • Soft cut lino
  • Ink roller
  • Printing ink
  • Smooth cartridge paper

Get Started

You can draw the design you’d wish to print onto paper, to test it out first. When you’re ready, draw the design onto the lino in pencil, then use the lino-cutting tools to carve out the design. This technique may take some time to perfect, so use a spare piece of lino to get used to carving first, if you like. Once your design is ready, use the ink roller to thoroughly and evenly coat the lino. Then, press it down onto the cartridge paper, using the ink roller to roll over the back of the lino. Slowly lift the lino off the paper, and admire your finished piece!

Design Ideas

Natural forms are a popular choice when designing lino prints. Try replicating some flowers, trees, or birds. Avoid complex designs, such as portraits or images of buildings, until you are more confident.
