This is a public service announcement: check on your curly-haired friends this summer. The season is notorious for bringing frizz to the fore, which is public enemy number one for curly girls. If you’re fighting the frizz, these tips will help you win the war.

The Right Tools

It takes an army to battle frizz, so have all your soldiers on board. A satin pillowcase is much more gentle on your strands, preventing you from waking up with a bird’s nest on your head. There are also anti-static brushes that can be used to tame frizz. Try avoid using heat on your hair as this can dry it out even more, making it susceptible to humidity.

Magic Potions

Your hair needs a little extra TLC in the summertime. Apply a good leave-in conditioner that suits your hair type as this will act as a shield against the humidity. While your hair is wet, run some serum and oil through the ends. Any product with the words “anti-frizz” can also help you out.

Emergency Kit

When all else fails, sometimes it’s just best to tie your hair down. Keep an emergency anti-frizz kit on hand featuring bobby pins, clips, and elastics. You can create a quick braid to keep the frizz at bay or embrace an up-do.

There’s so much to love about summer—the sun, the beach, relaxing by the pool. Unfortunately, many of the seasonal pastimes we enjoy most also seem to do the most damage to our hair. Sun exposure, chlorinated pools, and high humidity can wreak havoc on locks, leaving them dry, frizzy, and brittle. However, with a little extra TLC, you can protect your hair from damage so that it maintains a healthy shine all season long. Here are some of our best summer hair-saving tips.

Keep it Covered

Protect against damage at the source by keeping your hair covered from the sun’s harmful rays. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or use a scarf when spending time outside, and consider using a leave-in conditioner with UV protection to create a barrier against sun damage. Like sunscreen, for your hair.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

A dry hair cuticle will become weak and brittle, so it’s essential to prioritize moisture retention to keep your hair healthy. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week, and apply a leave-in conditioner after washing your hair. We also recommend avoiding excessive heat styling and opting to air-dry your hair whenever possible.

Do a Pre-Rinse

Like a sponge, your hair is absorbent and will indiscriminately soak up whatever liquid you submerge it in. To protect it from the damaging effects of chlorine and salt, thoroughly wet your hair with clean water before you go swimming. Afterward, rinse thoroughly and use a clarifying shampoo to remove any residue. Follow up with plenty of conditioner.

There’s something about those effortless waves that sun and salt water create that we can’t get enough of come summertime. A day at the beach is a great way to leave your hair looking expertly styled without the need for a trip to the salon, but some of us either live too far away or just don’t have the time. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to achieve the same look from home (with the added bonus that you don’t have to track sand all over your house.) Here are our go-to tips and products for achieving beachy waves.

Use a Wave Spray

The key to beachy waves is salt water, and luckily there are tons of products on the market today to help you create the same look at home. Our favorite wave spray is by Ouai. It’s actually salt free but uses rice protein and coconut water to help you achieve that just-out-of-the-ocean look.

Try Twists & French Braids

Different hairstyles will leave different textures in your hair, so experiment with various twists and braids to see which ones create the look you’re after. We recommend braiding your hair while it’s still wet. Leave them in overnight and in the morning tousle your hair with a little more spray.

Use Heat

This may take a little more practice, but beach waves can also be achieved using tools like a curling iron or even a straightener.
