Over the past year, nail trends have been good enough to eat. Hailey Bieber got us obsessed with glazed donut nails and it just escalated from there. Milkshake nails took over for a bit, but now we’ve moved on to syrup.

The Western world is fairly late to the syrup trend as it is popular in Korea, having originated in Japan way back in 2015. The look is for anyone who prefers a neutral type manicure, but wants to jazz it up a bit with an ombré effect. Here’s how to do it at home.

Step #1

Apply a base coat to your nails and add a tip to the end in the color of your choice, as you would if you were doing a French manicure. Don’t worry if it isn’t even as it will blend out with the next few layers.

Step #2

Syrup nails work best with light colors that have a sheer finish, so stick to nudes and neutrals as the gradient effect won’t be noticeable with bold hues. Once the first layer is dry, apply two to three more. The trick is to always start a little lower each time so that the color builds up by the tip, but remains sheer near the cuticle.

Step #3

Once you’re happy with how it looks, apply a top coat. This should give your nails that glossy syrup effect.

Of all of the beauty trends we predicted for 2023, fruit-inspired nails were not on our list, but we’re now six months into the year, #fruitnails is having a moment on TikTok, and, all things considered, we’re not mad about it. After all, what says “summer” more than ripe, juicy berries and seedless watermelon? Fruity nails are a fun, easy way to add some color to your look that doesn’t require any kind of long-term commitment. Here are a few of our favorite takes on the trend that we’ve seen so far this season.

Fruit Salad

Keep it simple with this fresh take on a classic French manicure. The artist included a mix of cherries, berries, and citrus fruit along with a few clear rhinestones, which add a sparkly touch to a bright and colorful summer design.

Juicy Fruit

As if the watermelons weren’t already mouthwatering enough, this artist added a few drops of a clear gel polish to create the illusion of condensation over this design. The result is a sparkly, textured look that captures the feeling of cutting into the first melons of the season.

Berry Beautiful

We love the way this artist made use of the nails’ negative space by alternating strawberry and French manicure-inspired designs using the same colors. Together, they create a playful, yet cohesive look that’s sure to complement any summer outfit.

Experimenting with trends is a great way to have fun with fashion, but it can get fairly expensive. It’s become standard for trends to go in and out of style at a rate that’s difficult for most of us to keep up with, and this creates strain on both our wallets and the environment. That said, we know that fashion and beauty are forms of self-expression that are important to so many people.

Rather than suggest forgoing trends entirely, we love the idea of trying out smaller, simpler options that don’t have the same potential to leave you with buyer’s remorse. Nail art is one of our favorites and this holiday season has inspired several nail art trends that we’re especially excited to try.

Starburst Twinkles

This trend is a fun way to pay homage to the spirit of the season without venturing being too cartoonish. The starbursts can be painted using a glitter polish for extra shine or a plain color for a more understated look.

Border Nails

We like to think of this trend as kind of a French Manicure 2.0. There’s still a bit of nude or pale pink space in the center, but the nail is outlined with bold colors and lines that create a fun frame.

Metallics

We have a feeling Taylor Swift is responsible for this one (have you seen her new music video for Bejeweled?!) But whatever’s behind the trend, we’re not mad about it. Silver and gold designs of all kinds are all over social media, offering a fun alternative to the seasonal defaults of red and green.

If we had to pick a single nail art trend that everyone seems to be raving about right now, 2D nails would make the cut. They look straight out of a comic book, and there are several variations of this trend that you could try—starting with these five.

Keep It Simple

There’s no need to experiment too much with these nails if you don’t want to because the basic style looks amazing, as well. It’s usually done with a matte finish in shades of white and beige, while black lines give it a 2D cartoon look.

French Cartoon Nails

French manicure is one of the most popular looks in the world of nail art. It’s never going out of style because it’s easy to adapt it to pretty much every rising trend out there, including the 2D comic book nails.

Add Some Color

If you’re not a huge fan of subtle nail art and want your nails as vibrant as possible, adding some color to the mix is always an option.

Make It Shine

2D comic book nails usually come with a matte finish to recreate the look of paper, but you can easily make them glossy or add some glitter to the mix.

More Is Better

If 2D nails are too simple for you, consider adding some hand-drawn details to the mix. They’ll add to their comic book vibe and make them really pop.
