To-do lists can be a great way to organize our time and make sure we do everything we need to get done. However, an ever-expanding to-do list can feel overwhelming, and even paralyzing. Where to begin? Follow these top tips to make your to-do-list useful again!

Prioritize

Look at your deadlines and prioritize according to urgency and importance. There’s no point ticking off a bunch of tasks that can wait if you’re simply putting off a more pressing job. Organize your list in order of priority and use colored markers to denote categories.

Cut Out Irrelevant Tasks

If your to-do list has become long and unwieldy, it’s a good idea to condense it. Some tasks that seemed relevant on Monday might not be on Wednesday. Cut out any tasks that have become irrelevant and you will start to feel the stress melting away!

Break Down Larger Tasks

Larger tasks are the most overwhelming and scary. If you’re feeling stuck, break down larger projects into small, manageable and actionable tasks. That way, you can tick things off more often, releasing dopamine into your brain and making you feel more productive!

Reward Yourself!

Come up with a reward system so you feel more motivated to complete the items on your list. Finished 5 tasks? Have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Working on that thing you’ve been putting off all week? Plan to take a 30-minute break once you’re done!

Getting in shape doesn’t happen overnight. The only way to make it work is to be incredibly resilient, consistent, and excited about your endeavors. Now, that’s all good and dandy, but it’s easier said than done. It’s easy to fall away from a good workout routine—after all, life gets in the way sometimes. But that’s not the real culprit. No, the real culprit is that we point to our past failures as reasons to not try again.

Don’t Be a Victim of Your Past

Have you ever gotten all amped up for a new workout regimen, only to change your mind later because you allowed that pestering voice inside your head to say, “Why bother? You didn’t stick to your last one!”? If that’s the case, just bear in mind that that’s completely normal. We all have those doubts occasionally, but the key is to not fall prey to them.

Just because you weren’t able to complete something in the past doesn’t mean you won’t be able to complete it this time. You’re a completely different person now, with more life experience, more knowledge, and perhaps more conviction to follow through. The only thing holding you back is the idea that you “can’t” do it. One of the most interesting new aspects of our modern culture is the idea that an average person off the street can start their own social media page, and within weeks can become a pseudo-celebrity. This is obviously a more extreme example, but the core idea rings true. There are countless individuals who have become “influencers”, sharing their talents, beliefs, and visions with followers all across the world. But should you follow them?

Are They Providing a Service?

The first thing you should ask yourself is, “Is this person I’m following providing me with a service?” Perhaps they’re a chef, musician, or fitness guru, and they’re constantly giving out tips that improve your life. In this case, we think it’s a great idea to follow them.

Otherwise… Tread Lightly

If they’re not providing a service, and you’re just following them because you think they’re cool—that’s also fine! One of the most interesting new aspects of our modern culture is the idea that an average person off the street can start their own social media page, and within weeks can become a pseudo-celebrity. This is obviously a more extreme example, but the core idea rings true. There are countless individuals who have become “influencers”, sharing their talents, beliefs, and visions with followers all across the world. But should you follow them?

Are They Providing a Service?

The first thing you should ask yourself is, “Is this person I’m following providing me with a service?” Perhaps they’re a chef, musician, or fitness guru, and they’re constantly giving out tips that improve your life. In this case, we think it’s a great idea to follow them.

Otherwise… Tread Lightly

If they’re not providing a service, and you’re just following them because you think they’re cool—that’s also fine! However, we’d just like to add that it’s important to maintain a little balance in these scenarios. Similar to the way we idolize celebrities, we can also raise influencers onto a pedestal to a point where it’s unhealthy. If you’re constantly waiting on bended knee for their next video, it’s probably best to take a few steps back.
