Staying hydrated is crucial for optimal performance and recovery during and after a workout. Adequate water intake helps maintain the body’s fluid balance, regulates body temperature, and supports various physiological functions. Here’s why drinking water before and after a workout is essential.

Pre-Workout Hydration

Drinking water before exercise helps hydrate the body and prepare it for physical exertion. Proper hydration improves blood circulation, which ensures that oxygen and nutrients are efficiently delivered to the muscles. It also helps lubricate the joints, reducing the risk of injuries. Aim to drink around 16-20 ounces of water two to three hours before your workout, and an additional eight to 10 ounces 10-15 minutes before starting.

During-Workout Hydration

It’s essential to drink water during your workout to replenish fluids lost through sweat and prevent dehydration. The exact amount of water needed varies depending on factors like intensity, duration, and individual sweat rate. As a general guideline, aim to drink seven to ten ounces (200-300 ml) of water every 10-20 minutes during exercise.

Post-Workout Hydration

Rehydrating after a workout is crucial for recovery and restoring fluid balance. During exercise, the body loses water and electrolytes, so it’s important to replenish these to support muscle repair and recovery. Aim to drink 16-24 ounces (475-710 ml) of water within two hours of completing your workout.

We’ve all heard that we need to drink between 11 and 16 cups of water per day, but the time we drink it can make an impact, too. Consuming H2O on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, has a host of health benefits that will help you feel your best.

Increases Energy Levels

Not all of us wake up with a spring in our step, but water can help. The liquid increases the number of red blood cells in our bodies which then deliver more oxygen to our brains. The result is us feeling more alert and energized for the day ahead!

Boosts Metabolism

Studies have shown that drinking just half a liter of water can increase one’s metabolic rate by 30%. Water can also make you feel full, as well as remove the by-products of fat cells.

Eases Aches and Pains

If you tend to wake up with back pain or joint pain, drinking water in the morning may bring you relief. H2O acts as a natural lubricant for joints and can flush out harmful toxins like acid waste. Drinking enough water will also prevent headaches caused by dehydration.

Makes Your Skin Glow

Hydrated skin is happy skin. Not only will sipping water on an empty stomach make your skin more radiant, it will also help retain the elasticity and prevent wrinkles.

You’ve just spent an hour doing squats, burpees, leg raises, and lunges. The sweat is dripping from your forehead and you’re more than a little dehydrated. The first thing to do after an intense workout is replenish your body by giving it some water. And you may have noticed that it tastes a bit sweeter than usual. According to science, you’re not just imagining it.

A study has determined that sweet taste intensity and sensitivity increase after acute exercise. The reason, however, is not that clear-cut.

It’s possible some people find that minerals in water generally taste sweet, and this is only intensified after a hectic workout.

It could also be that the body has entered ketosis as a result of the extreme workout, during which it burns fat due to a lack of carbohydrates. One effect of ketosis is sweeter breath caused by the breakdown of ketones for energy. Hence, it may make water taste a little sweeter, too.

Regardless of the reason, or the flavor of the H2O, make sure that your body is properly hydrated even before you begin working out as it needs enough water to perform at its best.

How you spend your first hour in the morning can set the tone for the rest of your day. Having a morning routine can save you time and energy and help you to have productive days ahead. So instead of hitting the snooze button two or three times, create a morning routine that will get you up and ready for the amazing day ahead. Here are four healthy habits you can do in the morning.

Meditation

So there is a slight debate on whether to meditate before you journal or vice versa, but whichever way you choose to do it, a five to 10-minute meditation in the morning is the best way to destress and start your day on the right foot.

Journal or Write Gratitude

Whether you have five minutes or 45 minutes in the morning, take the time to write down how you are feeling. If you only have five minutes, you can use the Five Minute Journal and write down three things you are grateful for, three things you want to happen that day, and your affirmation for the day. If you have more time then write from the heart, let it all go before you start your day.

Drink a Glass of Water

Start your morning hydrated by drinking a glass of water before you even leave the bed. It can improve mental performance during the day, give your skin a healthy glow, and can help to start your metabolism.

Eat a Proper Breakfast

Eating the right foods in the morning can get you prepared for the day ahead. Make sure you have enough time to sit down and eat a breakfast full of carbs, protein, and healthy fats. This will kick-start your metabolism and help you balance your blood sugar for the rest of the day. If you are short on time then you can drink a green smoothie, but make sure to eat something proper a few hours later.
