While it can be daunting to visit a country where you don’t speak the native tongue, it should definitely not hold you back! 

Know the Basics

No one is expecting a visitor to be fluent in the local language, but a little bit of effort goes a long way. Brush up on some native words like hello, please, and thank you. It will be easy to tell from your accent that you are not from those parts, but your attempt to converse in the common tongue will not go unnoticed or unappreciated.

Refrain from Using this Common Phrase

The fear of not being able to communicate your needs when traveling to a place with a different language is totally valid. So it’s completely understandable that you may ask people, “Do you speak English?” Yet, those 4 words can come off unintentionally offensive as English is the widest-spoken language in the world. The last thing you want is to accidentally insult the person you’re trying to speak to! Using the local language, try saying, “I don’t speak [whatever the language is of the country]. English?” What this does is acknowledge that you are in their country, and while you may not speak the language, you’re wondering if they possibly speak yours.
