Many of the previous winners of the People’s Choice Award went on to win or score Oscar nominations, and satirical comedy American Fiction won that prestigious honor at this year’s TIFF.

D—s: The Musical

This musical about two business rivals who realize they’re identical twin brothers was the talk of the town in Toronto. It’s A24’s very first musical and it marks the feature film debut of the iconic rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

The Boy and the Heron

Hayao Miyazaki’s comeback film The Boy and the Heron had its international premiere in Toronto after making a splash in Japan, and it made us fall in love with his unique style of animation all over again.

Based on the life of photographer Lee Miller, played brilliantly by Kate Winslet, this film chronicles her time as a war correspondent for Vogue during World War II.

Dumb Money

Inspired by the true story of an aspiring Reddit investor who led to the demise of several Wall Street hedge funds after investing in Game Stop shares, Dumb Money was met with open arms by moviegoers in Toronto.
