If you’re taking a break from dairy, you’ve probably explored the variety of plant-based alternatives on the market. Let’s be real, some are definitely better than others. Almond milk still ranks as the most popular substitute for cow’s milk, but oat milk is a close second. Is it thanks to its creamy texture? Nutty flavor? Whatever the reason, oat milk is one of our favorites and not just because it’s super easy to make.

Step #1

Before they can be turned into milk, the oats require soaking. Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as soaking beans or chickpeas! Allow the oats to soften in some water for just 15 minutes to avoid becoming slimy.

Step #2

Now that your oats have plumped up, it’s time to give them a rinse. Drain the liquid with a strainer and run the oats under clean water to remove any excess starch. Once the water runs clear, you’re good to move on.

Step #3

Place the oats in a blender with 4 cups of water. To add some sweetness to the milk, pour in maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Blend it all up until it is smooth.

Step #4

Once you’re happy with the level of sweetness, strain the mixture and extract as much liquid as possible. Pour your oat milk into a resealable jar and allow it to chill in the fridge.
