]]>It’s important to have a space that feels like home. Put time and effort into making your new room or apartment into a sanctuary where you can truly relax.
For the first year of life in a new place, always say yes, even to things you wouldn’t normally go for! You never know which opportunities will lead to new friends, new hobbies, a new job or even a new romance.
A great way to feel rooted in a new place is to immerse yourself in the local culture. Take a language course, read books by local authors (in translation if necessary!), go to museums and sample plenty of the local cuisine.
You might feel like you have to tough it out all by yourself, but maintaining connections with loved ones back home is essential. Make time to keep up with your friends and family, and remember you still have a support network, even if they’re a plane ride away!
Be kind to yourself. It takes at least a year to adjust to life in a new country, especially with a new language. Don’t expect to have everything figured out all at once, and just enjoy the journey!
